Profiles: Dan 'the Beast' Severn Dan Severn captured the attention of fight and wrestling fans all over the world when he made his 1994 debut in the Ultimate Fighting Championships [UFC]. One of the original fighters to help drive the popularity of mixed martial arts forward, Severn began his career as a Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestler capturing several national and world titles. As a high school wrestler he was a two-time national champ and set eight national records in his career. Severn was inducted into Arizona State University's wrestling hall of fame at the end of his prestigious collegiate career. When Severn first stepped into "The Octagon", few anticipated how effective his wrestling skills would be in a ‘bare knuckle, no-holds barred’ contest. However, his success helped to promote major interest in wrestling in the martial arts world. In 1996, he became the UFC Superfight Champion defeating "The World's Most Dangerous Man", Ken Shamrock. Severn’s world class wrestling skill provided the foundation for his success but he has also since obtained black belts in the sports of Sombo, Judo, and Jui Jitsu. He also held the National Wrestling Alliance heavyweight title in the professional wrestling ranks for longer than any other previous NWA champion.
